Spontaneous moments of harmony fill you with wonder.
I've been surprised twice by moments of harmony, both involving music. You are probably thinking, “Of course, there was harmony. That’s an element of music.” No, I’m speaking of being in agreement and forming a pleasing whole.
The first instance was several years ago. My class worked hard for an end-of-the-year party to include a movie and ice cream. This was not a harmonious group of children. Four grade levels, behavior issues, and various disabilities, but they all agreed on a newly-released movie on DVD, Frozen.
Having no young children at home, I was unfamiliar with the movie. As I worked on end-of-the-year reports, imagine my surprise when all 20 students broke out in harmony to sing along with the first song, “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?”
That moment stuck with me. All the children, despite their differences, were in voluntary, spontaneous harmony.
It happened again just last week.
I was at my granddaughter's school helping in the cafeteria. Christmas music played in the background of school lunch conversations.
Suddenly, 300 first- and third-grade students joined in to sing along with Mariah Carey's “All I Want for Christmas is You.” Children of all races, ethnicities, and religions sang in voluntary and spontaneous harmony.
An experience like this makes you pause and appreciate the blessing of harmony.
All this makes me wonder. Are we surrounded by more harmony that goes unnoticed because we aren’t looking? There are probably instances around us that we don't notice.
Perhaps we need to look for more harmony in our lives. When you notice harmony, you will smile.
We need more harmony in the world.
