I&#8217;ll be sending out more about that later. Until then, this is what&#8217;s on my mind this week.</strong></p><p>If you are like me, you hear it all the time: &#8220;I&#8217;ll be glad to help.&#8221; I am guilty of saying it myself. Then, we don&#8217;t help unless we are specifically asked. And, those who need help may be hesitant to do just that.</p><p>I find it easier to follow through with an offer to help by finding myself in the right place to see that help is needed and spontaneously taking action. Or, when I&#8217;m in the grocery store, I&#8217;ll call that sick friend who can&#8217;t get out and ask what they need. </p><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m at the grocery by your house. What can I bring you?&#8221; </p><p>Doesn&#8217;t everyone keep a grocery list going?</p><p>We must make it our job to help, and just do it (to borrow a slogan from Nike).</p><p>Years ago, I was in a Florida Publix grocery and happened to witness an exchange between a manager and employee. Publix is known for its customer service. The employee asked a customer if they could help them out to their car with their groceries. The customer declined. That did not fly with the manager. He called the employee aside and told them helping the customer to their car with their grocery wasn&#8217;t a question. In the future, he was to tell the customer he would help them take the groceries to the car and do it.</p><p>At the opposite end of the spectrum is the store I was in last week. Every employee wears a vest that says &#8220;Here to Help&#8221;, &#8220;Happy to Help&#8221;, or something about helping.</p><p>When I shop, I often need help. Big store chains are under the impression that all of their customers are at least six feet tall. I am not. With my arm extended, I can reach shelved items as long as they are no higher than six feet. Even then, it may be a struggle to get the item I want. But some stores have one or more shelves higher than six feet!</p><p>I found myself in the &#8220;Here to Help&#8221; store looking at the bottles of red food coloring that extra foot plus some above my head. Even though an employee stood right next to me, I reached (I always figure that I can at least get a stretch out of my attempt). My reach was not enough. The employee beside me didn&#8217;t notice, or ignored, my struggle and walked away. Before I could ask for help, I heard from my other side, &#8220;Here, let me help you.&#8221; I thought it was another employee. I was wrong. It was a customer who saw my struggle and jumped into action. </p><p>That customer didn&#8217;t give me a choice. They just did it. His action took five seconds out of his time and prevented me from having to search for help.</p><p>Encountering people who recognize that help is needed and take action is where the good in life and resulting gratitude really show up in life.</p><p>I was grateful to the stranger who took action to help me. </p><p>We need to be the people who just take action when help is needed. If we practice, we become known to others as people that others don&#8217;t mind asking for help. They&#8217;ll know we mean it when we say, &#8220;I&#8217;ll be glad to help.&#8221; </p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Vd5U!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2134422e-c1f5-46ee-814a-15164f93c93f_1766x1773.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Vd5U!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2134422e-c1f5-46ee-814a-15164f93c93f_1766x1773.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Vd5U!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2134422e-c1f5-46ee-814a-15164f93c93f_1766x1773.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Vd5U!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2134422e-c1f5-46ee-814a-15164f93c93f_1766x1773.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Vd5U!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2134422e-c1f5-46ee-814a-15164f93c93f_1766x1773.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Vd5U!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2134422e-c1f5-46ee-814a-15164f93c93f_1766x1773.jpeg" width="346" height="347.3714609286523" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/2134422e-c1f5-46ee-814a-15164f93c93f_1766x1773.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1773,&quot;width&quot;:1766,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:346,&quot;bytes&quot;:412692,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://sgsabel.substack.com/i/209508044?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F89949755-c920-45f1-acfd-fb2ed050bc5d_1766x1773.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Vd5U!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2134422e-c1f5-46ee-814a-15164f93c93f_1766x1773.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Vd5U!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2134422e-c1f5-46ee-814a-15164f93c93f_1766x1773.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Vd5U!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2134422e-c1f5-46ee-814a-15164f93c93f_1766x1773.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!Vd5U!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F2134422e-c1f5-46ee-814a-15164f93c93f_1766x1773.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg aria-hidden="true" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Photo by S.G.S.
